My impressions of the the Household Stories by the Brothers Grimm was that they are shocking and don't beat around the bush. These stories were clearly not made for children, despite what some might think.
The purpose of these stories are to warn people about certain human actions that are unacceptable. Stories such as "The Fisherman and His Wife" or "The Death of a Hen" teach one that greediness and selfishness will only lead to despair. "The Frog Prince" tells the reader to stay true to their word, and you might be rewarded. These stories are meant to improve and guide mankind. Sure, they are entertaining to read, but when one gets down to the underlying meaning, these stories are meant to warn and to guide.
